Work Perks - Employee Discounts and Why You Should Never Miss Them

Whether you just started medical school, recently graduated or have been practicing for years, there's a good chance your school or employer is a medium to large-sized organization.  One of the benefits that goes with being a member of a bigger system is the employee discounts that your school/employer negotiated with other businesses who want to transfer those hard-earned dollars from your wallet into theirs.  These discounts are an essential part of your overall Pay & Benefits package and should never be overlooked.

Take my employer Florida Hospital for example, a simple google search for "Florida Hospital Employee Discounts" will lead you to a webpage where you can see all the discounts.  Clicking through to the "Cable, Phone, Internet" category reveals the following discounts:

  • 25% off AT&T Wireless
  • Up to $125 Credit with Bright House Networks
  • $10 off per Month from Verizon FIOS
  • 22% off Verizon Wireless
  • $25 reward card with each line of service or new device purchase with T-Mobile.

So let's say you work for Florida Hospital and have an average AT&T wireless bill of $141/month.  That's $141 x 25% = $35.25 in savings each month, or 9 tall Starbucks caramel macchiatos if you're so inclined.  And if you take advantage of some of the other offers, you can end up savings hundreds.

So go ahead, type "Your school/employer Employee Discount" into your online search engine of choice, you may be pleasantly surprised by how much money you can save.
