Welcome to the first Future Proof Shares post of 2017! Today I want to introduce the very first special edition of Future Proof Shares. If you look online, turn on your radio or your television, you'll run into many of us talking about money. Some have broader audiences (think Dave Ramsey), others may cater to a specific demographic (this blog for example). However, in 2016, it would be hard to find a media personality who's made more impact on Americans' financial lives as John Oliver.
British comedian John Oliver rose to fame as a regular on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. During the summer of 2013, while Stewart was working on his film Rosewater, Oliver guest hosted the Daily Show for 8 weeks. His performance was reviewed positively and 3 months later, HBO announced that it was giving Oliver his own late-night show - Last Week Tonight.
Last Week Tonight
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver takes a satirical approach to news, politics and current events. The show format allows for deep dives into a particular topic. The results of those deep dives are summarized and delivered in hilarious (albeit occasionally NSFW) and informative ways by John Oliver and a variety of show staff and celebrity guests. Since 2014, Oliver has become a public figure and influencer on topics he chooses to tackle. This influence has been dubbed the "John Oliver effect." His work on the show led him to being named one of Time's "100 Most Influential People" in 2015 and more recently Money Magazine's 2016 Money Champion of the Year. For this special edition of Future Proof Shares, I will be highlighting several segments from the show that deal with money and medicine. Enjoy!
